For a change the vestry seems to be the oldest part of the church. It was connected with an even older apsidial choir from the end of the 12th century, now disappeared. The present choir and three-aisled nave are supposed to have been erected in one go at the middle of the 13th century; even a tower was planned but was never erected, as the tower arch in the west proclaims. Some ready-cut pieces of stonework indicate that the tower was prepared by the "Egypticus" - workshop in the 14th century. The richly decorated late baroque pulpit is a gift from Governor Grönhagen.
