As in Norrlanda the church tower in När has served as a fortification: there are loop holes, directed at the road, in the first storey; it is also the oldest part of the church, from the beginning of the 13th century. Nave and choir were built at the end of the 13th century with richly ornamented portals. The fundaments of the 12th century church, then destroyed, have been found under the floor. For this church the well preserved baptismal font of the "Hegwald group" was procured. The church has valuable fittings from the 17th century. Note the portrait-like figures on the pew doors, wearing typical baroque fashioned costumes.
