The Churches of Gotland

Of a church from the second half of the 12th century the north wall with finely cut facade material and some remnants of the choir wall form part of the corresponding walls of the present church. Before the middle of the 13th century a new choir was begun and was covered with a rib vault after the pattern of Trinity church (Drotten) in Visby. After some time a new nave followed and, lastly, the broad gallery tower. When this was finished the church was consecrated in 1277. The fine decoration of the chancel arch was made as the nave was completed about 1250. The Rood is an excellent work from the 1180: ies but it was later transferred to a new ring-cross with reliefs in the corners in order to fill up the new rood arch. The baptismal font is a well preserved work by "Majestatis".
