The Churches of Gotland

HEMSE

In the second half of the 11 th century here stood a stave-church, of which a good deal of the building material was found under the floor of the present church in 1896. The portal posts show caned ornaments in the style of the rune-stones. The church has been partly reconstructed in the Historical Museum in Stockholm. The nave and the apsidial chancel of the Romanesque church seem to have been built about 1200, the tower some decades later. The whole church is decorated with mural paintings, for the most part by the "Passion master" in the 15th century; they were somewhat heavily restored and partly completed in the 1890s. The Holy Rood is an exquisite and very well preserved work from about 1170-80 by the master of the Viklau Madonna. The baptismal font is a combination of a Romanesque base and a Gothic bowl.
