The church was built in two stages: the chancel and the nave before,
and the tower after, the middle of the 13th century. The building was seriously
damaged by a fire in 1676; the mid column had to be reconstructed and a
new base for it was brought from the ruined church of Gann in Lärbro.
Owing to the fire no medieval fixtures have survived, but there are fragments
of 15th century mural paintings (Passion master) and in the nave a unique
ornamental wall decoration from the end of the 16th century. The baptismal
font with the monogram of the Danish King Christian IV was originally made
for the chapel of the castle Visborg and came to the church after the fire.
