The Churches of Gotland

The church got its rather uninteresting shape in 1858. But the tower dates from the Middle Ages. The altar-piece shows the monogram of Charles XI and the pulpit that of Frederic I. A pulpit from 1601 has been moved to the fishing chapel at Hall. The principal attraction of the church is the "seal-picture", a memorial tablet put up in 1618 by a party of seal hunters as a thanksgiving for a wonderful delivery after having been drifting for two weeks on an ice-floe in the Baltic; a verse in Danish tells the story.
